“You’re not your job. You’re not what proportion money you have got within the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your khakis.”
I stumbled upon this line while casually scrolling through Facebook upon waking up, with my eyes nearly closed. at first, I did not pay much attention (you can blame my not-so-awake-yet brain) but then I scrolled back to it and when I reread, that line really hit me. It’s meaning is hidden in one question:
Are you wasting your life if you are attempting to chase all those things?
In the midst of our pursuit of whatever we are after, it’s easy to tend to get so distracted that we lose sight of what matters. And before we all know it; we waste our time chasing and doing the wrong and unneeded things.
Nothing can define your progress but yourself, and for that being said, here are somethings that should not define you, my dear reader;
You Are Not Your social position
College degree, job title, number of friends and followers, are all means to live our lives. Somehow, we desire to stand out and have a place in society.
No matter what your social status is, you’re not better than the other person. You are you, despite of any other social status thing. People will value your kindness and compassion, not the number of followers on Instagram. It cannot define you; you only define yourself.
“People who hold important positions in society are commonly labelled “somebodies,” and their inverse “nobodies”-both of which are, of course, nonsensical descriptors, for we are all, by necessity, individuals with distinct identities and comparable claims on existence.”
― Alain de Botton
You Are Not Your Bucket List
You can get by by very little and still be content and satisfied. There, with realization, you’ll be able to get there and do the things that you just truly want and not simply because some article says: 10 stuff you Should Do. Don’t trick yourself into believing you’ve got to try and do crazy things just make your life count. It’s all useless if you retain going from one thing to the opposite just to cross things off your bucket list. No need to spend thousands of cash on that.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a bucket list. But we should always realize that we are able to live a meaningful life without one. Don’t put pressure on yourself just to try to do things. Who cares? Your life isn’t an Adidas slogan.
-nor a Nike slogan, please “just do it” if it is needed-
Wondering, have you ever had every day that you simply felt like time didn’t exist? When you’re fully immersed at the instant, time moves slowly? If yes then it doesn’t matter what you are doing, if you are doing it with 100% of your attention, you’re not wasting your life.
Call it presence, mindfulness, or whatever you would like. the purpose is this: you’ve got the facility to block time, so use it.
All you’ve got to try and live in the moment and your day. Freed from worry, pressure, and daydreams. After you do this, life is long and time will not pass in a very blink of a watch.
