We should all be Satirists

We should all be Satirists

Let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time in 1945 during the Second World war, there lived a young satire writer named George. He was very passionate about using his words to speak up against oppression and get justice for the oppressed. Although he lived in England, he was very upset with the suffering and death of people in Soviet Russia, a country on the tyrannical side of the Second World War. So he decided to do what he could do as a writer to help save these people.

He decided to write a book

The book he wrote – which is currently referred to as one of the best works of Satire ever written – went on to inspire millions of people in Soviet Russia to take a stand against a corrupt and wicked government and eventually overthrow them.

This author was George Orwell and the book he wrote was Animal Farm

You see, for as long as civilization has existed, there have always been a group of well-meaning individuals who seek to constructively criticize the government by telling stories in a way that is humourous and yet inspiring for the purpose of creating social impact and inciting meaningful conversations. And really, that is what Satire is all about

In the past, these individuals have included people like Aristotle, William Shakespeare, George Orwell and Lewis Carroll (author of Alice in Wonderland) to mention a few. Satire ranges from shows like the Daily Show by Trevor Noah to Books like Becoming Nigerian: A guide by Elnathan John.

Infact, Lady Whistledown in Bridgeton series by Netflix was also a Satirist.

And we currently live in unprecedented times, dear reader. We are constantly reminded of how important it is to Soro Soké and speak up against oppression, injustice and bad leadership in our society. And history has shown us that Satire is one of the best ways of doing this.

Because of this, we are excited to announce our partnership with Punocracy (Nigeria’s foremost Satire publishing platform) on our first ever Satire writing Masterclass.
