BREAKING THE CULTURE OF SILENCE

BREAKING THE CULTURE OF SILENCE

How would the world be if there is total silence where there is meant to be conversation? Maria popova said and I quote ‘we are our stories, stories that can be both prison and the crowbar to break open the door of that prison’.
There are a lot going on in the lives of individuals aside what we see (aside coming for lectures, putting on beautiful clothes and looking gorgeous). The clothes everyone put on, the smile being expressed by them and their makeup covers a lot of turmoil eating them up. It is he who wears the shoe that knows where it pinches. Silence is the ocean of the unsaid, the unspeakable, the repressed, the erased and the unheard. Everyone has his or her own sea of unspoken words says Rebecca Solnit. To some it is financial issues, some emotional issues, family issues, educational issues, medical issues, psychological issues or addiction that is eating them up.
Learning to speak up is necessary, so as not to die in silence, because silence kills.A number of people have committed suicide as a result of depression, sexual abuse, sexual molestation, physical abuse and so on because they did not confide in anybody. ‘To sin by silence, when we should protest makes cowards out of men’ says the poet Ella Whoeler Wilcox. ‘My silence had not protected me,your silence will not protect you’ says Rachel Carson, therefore we should speak up because silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented’ Eliel Wiesel wrote.
No silence is larger, both in age and in scope, nor more demanding of breaking, than the silencing of human’s voice. Let us speak up to people we trust, help agencies or organizations ready to assist without charges.
Everybody will all agree that through the breakage of silence,a lot of information about things happening in the world have been brought to our doorstep. This breakage of silence has helped people’s lives, especially people with similar stories.
Silence harms people from aspiring to great things that could transform our country for better.
Silence is crucially different from quietude. Silence being the absence of noise, and quietude being the absence of voice. What is unsaid because serenity and introspection are sought is different from what is not said because the threats are high or the barriers are great as swimming is from drowning.
Quiet is to noise,as silence is to communication. Do not keep quiet while the house is on fire.
Therefore do not be shy to say what you are going through. Speak up,speak out, speak loud. Together let us break the culture of silence to make the world a better place for us and generations to come.
